Use the expressive arts as a mode of inquiry or expression

The ability to use the expressive arts as a mode of inquiry or self-expression is a wonder skill. The pieces I have shared both represent this skill by depicting my own exploration and consensus on life and its beauty. Art is a way for people to express their own thoughts and opinions on the current world around them. I chose to expressive my views and feelings about how the world makes me feel about my own body through the etching print, Natural Beauty.

This print depicts a nude female, statue torso. In my own opinion this curvy, soft body type is stunning; however, this is not the case for others. Therefore, I chose to highlight what other people see as flaws on the body. My print expresses my own ideas of what natural beauty is and it is being done so I might share my own ideas to other people.

Similarly, the digital image, Emerge in Hope, captures the beauty of dancers performing from behind the curtain. A world few people get to access. As an artist I wanted to share the beauty of the anxiety, preparation, and performance all from the wings of the stage. Yet again, this project expresses my own ideas but also is informing the viewers of what they normally do not get to witness. The audience is now getting the full truth behind a performance.
Use technological skills to access information, organize knowledge, and communicate

Throughout my time at Seton Hill, I have been asked to research multiple topics and then communicate my findings and information to an audience. As a graphic designer I must do exactly this for all projects I am working on. I must fully understand the concept, the background information, the displayed information, etc. For my Typography I course, I researched and designed a poster about the Franklin Gothic typeface.

My assignment led me to complete in-depth research regarding the historical timeline of the Franklin Gothic typeface. My poster had to include important elements of the time period, visual details regarding the use of the typeface, and a section of text covering my findings. As you can see, I developed a front and back of the poster depicting well known logos, trending design choices, in addition to a lengthily amount of text. My design is visually interesting and easy to follow for the viewers.

In a similar sense, I designed multiple posters for my internship with Seton Hill’s Theatre and Dance Department. These posters involved immense research into the musical, play, or performance’s past. I completed research to accurately design each poster. Also, I was granted access to information regarding each performance such as performance dates, credits, etc. This information was important to display on the posters with correct use of typographical hierarchy so that my audience could visually tell what the important item is. Therefore, I have created multiple pieces of work and presentations that have used my technological skills to access information, organize, and communicate it to my viewers.
